about
As an artist (and a person), I've always felt that working with other people was a key way to expand your artistic vision. This is why I have been in so many different "side" groups. Inspiration can come from a lot of different sources so working with lots of people should theoretically multiply the occurrence of those inspirational moments.
During the early 2000s, I was recruited to assist the group 75 Degrees (R.I.P. Big C), as one of their key members (DJ D Sharp.... one of my DJing heroes and inspirations) was not going to be able to make a gig. The gig went so well that they asked me to stay on, even after Sharp's return. Those were magical times as 75 was more of a fusion group so there would be rapping and singing and (eventually) choreographed dance moves (by yours truly).
It was after one of our rehearsals that DJ Malachi aka Uncle Mal asked me to stick around because he had something for me. He pulled a white label vinyl out of his bag and threw it on the 12s and this beat was on it. I went fucking BONKERS as I am a HUGE Al Green fan and I couldn't believe how deftly Love and Happiness had been flipped. Since it was a white label, we had no idea who produced it, but I didn't care. It was mine!!! Later on, I would find out that the beat was produced by Exile.... Yes.... THAT Exile.... Blu and Exile "Below The Heavens"... Exile.
I took the record home that night at around 10 PM, ripped the song to my computer, wrote and layed down the lyrics and had a whole song by 1 AM. This song piratically wrote itself.
I scoured all my resources to get Exile's contact info and when I finally got his email address, I bombarded him with emails stating that I would purchase this beat from him. No luck. :-(
Soon after, I would hear the double-time portion of this beat on a Jurassic 5 record. Well... If you have to lose out to somebody, that's not a bad choice.
